At Satya Niketan, South Delhi's education hub, a restaurant leaves one with the feeling of having looted the eatery. suchayan mandal joins the students gang
If Delhi's price rise has always been the bugbear in planning a hangout, Dude Food at Satyaniketan is the place to try. Bang opposite Venkateswara College, the joint has a weird interior and grand food to satisfy both taste buds and wallet. Dudefood is basically an American concept, where one gets food high on grease and calories with lots of beef and ham at a jaw dropping low price.
The decor
"Come as normal homo sapiens and leave charged as a superman", promises the board above the entrance. The blue neon light of the Insect-"asur" (insect repellant) at the entrance warns one for one last time to beware of the calories down under! Don't pay heed! A magnified image of Einstein sticking his tongue out and all spoofed "heroes" joining the league gives the right-side wall a right to scream out one's self rights! With Rajnikanth, Simpson and Bob Marley all spoofed up, one finds the Joker with scars. The opposite wall has a street graffiti that reads "life is awesome" with thick cheese overflowing from each corner. Nothing has a parity here! And that forms the USP of the place. Teaming up with plenty of yellow bulbs are two hooters to give the "feedback" ~ they feed you and you blow the hooter, if satisfied.
While the water bottles here wear jeans (read stickers), there is a TV look- alike glass that leads to the kitchen, staying true to the open kitchen formula. And yes, the washroom here has a place for aliens too (so reads the sign outside). Journalist turned restaurateur, Sumit Goyal believes in volume sales and so the price is relatively low. Chain styled business is what he prefers with 5-6 outlets by the end of this year. Venky students are often found using the restaurant entrance as a notice board with posters of plays inviting the diner.
The spread
As we started off with a thick minestrone soup with bread (priced Rs 75), the tangy flavour reminded one of mom-made soup. The mocktail is fancifully named John Lemon and is a sweeter version of fresh lime soda. The next to arrive on the table was Baked chicken nachos. The dish's dryness was relieved with cheese and chicken strips gave it a distinctive look. Served with salsa dip, it's another hunger reliever.Whatever one chooses from the menu is heavy ~ students' pocket and hunger both saved. Pigs in a Blanket is another starter priced at Rs 195, which is a smoked bacon wrapped chicken sausage served with a special dip.
Student-friendliness make it zero alcohol. But not to worry, Drunken Chicken is a dish priced at Rs 295 and is a 16-wing dish, marinated and cooked in Old Monk rum. Even the french fries have chicken toppings or fried chicken chunks and is priced Rs 125-175. Not to forget, the Dude lamb burger. With 300 gm of minced lamb made into patties, smoked bacon strips and fried eggs included, at Rs 185, it is indeed "heaven". In desserts, we tried the popular Scottish street food, Fried Mars ~ a batter-fried Mars bars with ice-cream for Rs 145. The princely meal had ended. I feared to stand on a weighing scale for next three weeks.
